Radon Testing & Inspections
Protect yourself and your loved ones from a leading cause of cancer.
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas. It forms naturally from the decay (breaking down) of radioactive elements, such as uranium, which are found in different amounts in soil and rock throughout the world and most of Nebraska. Radon gas in the soil and rock can move into the air and into underground water and surface water.
Being exposed to Radon for a long period of time can lead to lung cancer. Radon gas in the air breaks down into tiny radioactive elements (Radon progeny) that can enter and affect the lungs by emitting radiation as they continue to decay. This radiation can damage lung cells and eventually lead to lung cancer. While cigarette smoking is by far the most common cause of lung cancer in the United States, Radon is the second leading cause.
The only way to assess Radon levels is with a professional test. Inspectors for VIP-Inspection are qualified and licensed to test Radon levels and are here to help protect your health. A Radon test includes placing inspection devices in habitable areas of your home. We measure ongoing Radon levels and inform you when they are at actionable level (4pCi or more). See EPA guidelines for more details.
VIP-Inspection Radon inspectors:
· Determine whether Radon reduction actions must be taken.
· Use cutting-edge tools for precise results.
· Have completed specialized training. Licenses are required in Nebraska.
· Have in-depth knowledge of appropriate Radon testing equipment placement.
· Aid in preserving your health by providing you with additional information on how to mitigate the affects of Radon for you and your family in the home.
Every home, no matter its location, age, or if it has a basement, should be tested for Radon. Radon levels fluctuate. As your local environment and geology changes, the Radon levels in your home also change. Even a seasonal shift can impact Radon readings. Testing should be an essential component of your standard home maintenance routine. Just like visits to your doctor, Radon inspections should be scheduled regularly.
VIP-Inspection recommends Radon tests every 2-3 years. If you’re conducting a real estate transaction, considering a home renovation, or you just moved into a newly constructed home, Radon levels should be tested. Though the adverse effects of Radon take time, the consequences can be severe. After years of heightened exposure, your risk of lung cancer significantly increases.
